The Brothers Grimm Folktales - 200th Anniversary

The Brothers Grimm are probably the best known storytellers in the world.

Jacob & Wilhelm Grimm were born in 1785 and 1786 in Hanau, Germany and were part of a large family of eight boys and one girl. Their father Philipp was a lawyer and both Jacob and Wilhelm had intended to study Law and become lawyers, however their real interests lay elsewhere and they instead spent much of their lives collecting German folk tales.   In 1812 they published their first volume of 86 stories and tales Children's and Household Tales (Kinder-und Hausmarchen). The table of contents included such famous stories as: Cinderella; Snow White; Rapunzel; Hansel and Gretel; Little Red Riding Hood and Rumplstiltskin. But if you're looking for a sweet soothing tale "Once upon a time......and they lived happily ever after" you might be best to look somewhere other than the original folk tales of the Brothers Grimm. The stories collected by Jacob & Wilhelm Grimm in the early 1800's serve up life as many generations of Europeans knew it - fickle and often cruel. The early editions were not aimed at children at all and the brothers initially refused to have illustrations. Once they discovered this young audience they set about refining and softening their tales. Since the deaths of the Brothers in about 1860 the tales have undergone many adaptions and translations into more than 160 languages. The release of the film adaption of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937 was the first of three wildly popular Disney story adaptions. Since then many other adaptions have made it to the big screen.

Currently we have many books containing one or more Grimm's folktale/fairytale in the Non-fiction section of our library as well as some picture book versions of individual tales.

Upper Hutt Library holds numerous books containing one or more Grimm's folktale/fairytale.

The above information about the Grimm Brothers and their folktales was adapted from these web pages: here, here and here, here and here.

Tolkien Week

This week is Tolkien Week.
First celebrated in 1978 by the American Tolkien Society, and observed every year over the week containing 22nd September - known as Hobbit Day.  Why 22nd September?  Because it's the birthday of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins of course!  This year is even more significant it being the 75th Anniversary of the publication of "The Hobbit" by J R R Tolkien.
Sir Peter Jackson has joined in Tolkien Week this year by releasing a new trailer for the first Hobbit movie due to be released at the end of this year.

The Story of Doctor Dolittle

Another in a series of posts about children's classic books available for borrowing from our school library.

The Story of Doctor Dolittle was written by Hugh Lofting, it was published in 1920 and was the first in a series of books about Doctor Dolittle and his adventures.  In The Story of Doctor Dolittle we first meet the doctor with a soft spot for animals, who gives up treating people after his patients are scared away by his increasing number of strange pets.  His wise old parrot, Polynesia, teaches him animal languages and he starts treating sick animals instead. Doctor Dolittle's fame in the animal kingdom spreads throughout the world and soon he sets off to cure a monkey epidemic in Africa, having all sorts of exciting adventures on the way.  Hugh Lofting wrote and published ten books about Doctor Dolittle before his death in 1947, and a further two books containing both previously published and previously unpublished stories were released after his death.

A number of movie adaptions and a television series have been produced based on Hugh Lofting's Doctor Dolittle books.

In our fiction section we have a copy of Doctor Dolittle Stories (which contains stories from all 12 of the Doctor Dolittle books) and a copy of Doctor Dolittle's First Adventure which has been adapted for beginning readers. We also have a copy of the picture book Hugh Lofting's Travels of Doctor Dolittle.

Upper Hutt Public Library has 5 copies of Hugh Lofting's books about the adventures of Doctor Dolittle in the Children's section and 3 DVD's.

Most of the above information is from or adapted from: here, here and here.

You can read The Story of Doctor Dolittle online here or here.

Cornelia Caroline Funke (pronounced: FOON-ka) was born  in Dorsten, Germany, on 10th December 1958, she has a sister and two brothers. As a child Cornelia wanted to be an astronaut but instead she studied education theory at Hamburg University and then went on to study book illustration at design college. She began a career as a book illustrator but soon realized that she wanted to write and illustrate her own stories.  During the 1980s and early 1990s, she became well-known as an author of children's books in her native Germany, with the Ghosthunters (Gespensterjäger) and Wild Chicks (Wild Hühner) series of books. But her international breakthrough came in 1997 when Dragonrider and later The Thief Lord (2000), both huge successes in  Germany,  were  published  in  English and  brought  her  writing  to  an international audience.

Cornelia is best known for the Inkheart trilogy (Inkheart, Inkspell and Inkdeath) the first book of the series has been adapted into a movie.  Cornelia has been writing for about 25 years and has written more than 40 books.  Some 18 of her books have so far been translated into English, and this number is set to increase.

Books by Cornelia Funke we have in our library:  Princess Pigsty - a Picture Book; and copies of  Igraine the Brave; When Santa Fell to Earth; Dragonrider;  Saving Mississippi and the four books in the Ghosthunters series in the Fiction section.
